I work as a LC in a hospital based breastfeeding clinic. Recently I was
approached by a doctor who expressed concerns than we were leaving
ourselves open to potential litigation when suggesting herbs to
breastfeeding mothers. She feels that if anything goes wrong with the
mother or child they could come back and blame it on the herbs. Therefore
falling back on us. In the past we have provided the client with the
information sheet on herbs from Jack Newman and have also discussed the
lack of research that is available on the herbs. We also state that it is
not our role to prescribe- we share the information and they can decide
what to do with that information.
How do other clinics handle this issue? Is anyone aware of any centers that
are doing research on the safety of herbs in breastfeeding?
