My mother died years ago of this disease. I know more about it than I care
to. It was pretty awful, and we have no idea where she got it from except
that my parents had spent time with some of the tribes in the South Pacific.
(Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia) They lived in Australia
for two years, and we have always wondered if it is possible to pick it up
in any of those places. I know that tribes which practice cannibalism have
transmitted the disease from one person to another.
Gruesome subject!
If it comes through in breast milk and can be harbored in the body for years
I am still safe. My mother did not breastfeed any of us. Just wasn't done
then.
