The Internet Technology mailing lists were intended to support the
introduction of various technologies until they matured sufficiently to
be turned over to other groups for long-term support. Since that
applies to this technology, this mailing list is now closed. The list
archives will remain available through
http://microsoft.ease.lsoft.com/archives/index.html

If you have questions about this technology in the future, please ask
them in the microsoft.public.site-server.* family of newsgroups on the
msnews.microsoft.com server. You can find answers to many common
problems, and newsgroups that support other technologies or products,

Does anyone know what's actually happening to the microsoft NNTP server?

I've seen some reference to it in the IIS 4.0 beta but cannot find it there.
All references to Normandy now say go use site server, but its not part of
site server.

Anyone know what's happened to this elusive piece of software? Has it been
killed by the exchange group? Did the source safe server for it suffer a
disk crash? Did the guy developing it simply shoot himself one morning?

My understanding is it is in fact included with IE 4.0; however if you
review the MS roadmap for the messaging products you will notice a
merger between the Exchange Server platform and MCIS.

Personally, I'd like to a separate NNTP Server.

Derek,

INS 1.0 is part of MCIS 1.0 the version included with K2
(IIS4.0) is a scaled down version that doesn't support Feeds not
recommended for full scale ISP's ......there will be a full update for
INS 1.0 which is in Beta right now.. site server (olympus) is a seprate

Where'd you find that download?

I'm installing the IIS 4.0 version right now. By 'doesn't support feeds'
does that mean it only copes with local newsgroups? If so that is somewhat
lame.

I've checked out the IIS 4 nntp server, I could not find any mechanism for
doing feeds (either inbound or outbound). It has support for authentication
and even for SSL but not for feeds.

This is major lossage IMHO, I guess we're going to have to pretend to be an
ISP and get hold of the real news server. :-)

Is it possible to develop with MCIS Membership 1.0, that when you sign-in to the site it starts billing you a flat rate of $19.95 for 30 hours, and then after the 30 hours has been used up it flips over to billing you $2.50/hr and/or upsells you to buying a full membership?

MBS 1.0 does not include a biling system. It does have billing APIs for
applications to write billing events to on the app server and feed them
to a back end event collector. From there you would need to use a third
party billing system such as those offered by Portal or LHS that
integrate with our event collector and actually perform the billing
functions.

I also tried to gain some idea of pricing. I think that the key
is, MS are not going to announce "official" public pricing. You
will get referred to an account rep. and they'll work it with you,
depending upon numerous factors.

Hope this helps, Nige.

I talked with Kent on the Microsoft Chat server and he pointed me to the
HKEYlocalmachine/... yadda yadda...../services/ChatSvc/ registry setting..
Apparently, class settings have no bearing on the IRCOP settings, but it
must be a "permission" setting in the registry.

I still don't have it working yet. :(

The latest release of the News server has a Web Admin tool written in
.pgi pages. I was hoping to create a similar functionality in ASP
pages, but haven't had any success. For example,
<% set x=Server.CreateObject("MSWC.Nntp")
If not IsObject(x) then
response.write "could not create news object"
end if
%>
always generates the error:

Server object error 'ASP 0177:8002802a'
Server.CreateObject Failed
/nntp.asp, line 12
The call to Server.CreateObject failed. The requested object instance
cannot be created.

I was just trying to do the same thing myself yesterday, and found
that if you rename the .asp extension to a .pgi extension this problem
goes away.
As far as I can make out this object or the .pgi pages expect you
to be authenticated, so this won't work from a non-Administrator
account. This is a pity as it would be nice to create a web front end
showing all the active News Groups.
I tried to find some documentation on .pgi pages but haven't had
any luck. They seem to behave slightly different from .asp pages, and

Sad to say, Ive tried to use this (Normandy News) product (in beta) but its instability has made me wait until Exchange 5 is launched.

Main achievements:
- Full news feed via my ISP (unimpressed)
- Intranet - local news groups established (fell over quickly)

Main issues:
- Data (news items) corrupted
- Poor command line utils (esp when trying to recover the above)

I've noticed that a lot of the Normandy components use .pgi files
in a Web browser for administration. I've looked at the code in these

I'm also wondering if anyone knows of any documentation on the

It appears that any Active Server Page can create, read, write or
overwrite any file on the system, regardless of security permissions.
I hope I'm not missing something really stupid, but here's how to
recreate the situation.
Share out the wwwroot directory to a user, or use InterDev and
allow the user to login to the web. This I would imagine is all that
you want the user to see.
If this user creates an .asp page, and uses the
Scripting.FileSystemObject, he has full control over any file on the
machine.

From what I've seen and gotten from Microsoft, the filter DLL is running in
the security context of IIS. It is because of this that a filter DLL can
mistakenly access files the current Web user shouldn't be able to. Under
the same guise, I'd assume that anything down the line should also not be

Actually, I think you are missing the point -- no offense.

Internet Service Manager has the ability to restrict access to your site by
IP address. It also has the ability to say whether files in a directory
can be ran and/or read.

When securing your site based on membership (who you are, not where you are
located), IIS turns to NTFS and the security access associated with the
file. For instance, in IIS you have the ability to say "Allow Anonymous".
This is used in conjuction with the "Anonymous Logon". The reason is
simple, and file that can be

Are you setting the permissions to be read only, or execute only ? If

Here are the steps how a moderator posts an article he receives via
email to the INS server... this procedure is also described in chapter 4
"operating news server" on page 72 of the MCIS INS documentation (also on
the cdrom)

When you receive the message you'll need to "cut & paste" highlight the
article and click on copy or past.. then telnet into your news server and
manually post it... watch the typo's if you make a single error you can't
backspace you need to start the post over in the example below name of
newsgroup is "testgroup"

The ILS verification page works with netmeeting. If you install
netmeeting on
a PC that has access to your ILS server, and you select this server from
netmeeting,
the verification shows you're online.
If you have 2 netmeeting systems, and both are connected to the ILS
server,
just clicking the URL on the verification page
(http://<dns-name-of-server>/ILS/verify/verify.htm
with default installation) will start netmeeting on the other system.
Look at those URLs
for working with Netmeeting.

I went to download SP2 today and it was gone. The HREFs were still
pointing to it but the file was gone.

Can you verify it's still there? I was wondering if they pulled it off
the site for some reason...

Well afte going through the documentation a few times, I saw that the only way to authenticate someone for the

But this would require a different userid for the web and for the Chat ?

What if the person has 3 internet accounts ?

I spoke with one of our Product Managers regarding this issue. He

Hi there,

So am I right to asume that Sicily = MBS ?

What do you mean by "corporate accounts" ?

Right now we are using some 3rd party software to control access to IIS 2.0 web pages. Now there is nothing out
there to control access to the MS chat server. (Might have to look at unix for a solution here =( )

Hi there Pascal,

Right offhand, I'm not sure what the best tool is for controlling access to your chatserver, but your webaccess can be arranged quite simply using standard NTFS file-level access control. You should bear in mind that "The Beast" (Sicily) was built 'cause NT can *only* deal with about 100000 users :-). The membership System deals with about 5 Million users per setup!!
Try out webaccess with standard NT security. It's worth it!!

Yes, Microsoft Membership System (MBS) is the product that includes the
tecnology formerly code-named Sicily. MBS is designed for very large
services that need scalable authentication and access control as well as
billing interfaces that integrates tightly with the application servers
in the Microsoft Commercial Internet System line (Normandy).

Others on the list will have to respond to your additional questions.

I'll try to clarify a few things here.

NT security is definitely the best solution for Intranets and most Web
sites. You can create tens of thousands of accounts in the native NT 4
security database and its very easy to administer. Microsoft's Internet
servers - IIS as well as the Mail (IMS), News (NNTP), Chat and Address
Book (LDAP) - support authenticating users against against the security
database using either the widely support clear-text logon (BASIC)
protocols (with or without SSL for channel encryption to protect the
password) to the more secure, single logon NT challenge-response
protocol (NTLM) that

Automation of NT accounts can be done with some calls to netui1.dll, you'll find everything you need if you do
a search on Q159498 on microsoft., but you'll need to keep an extra database for customer information.

Adam,

Thanks for the response. Is this server/server protocol defined in some
RFC or IETF-draft, or can Microsoft supply the specifications?

In our ISP, a chat server is useless if we cannot link it in a network
with other providers. Using chatsock maybe we can set up a gateway.

FYI

-----Original Message-----

He is correct. Here is a little more clarification. The user properties
database is accessed by the MPS SSO (MPS.ProperyDatabase in the example
below) by using the GUID in the cookie to do a lookup/query in the
database. This GUID is essentially the key to the database. There is no
other way for the MPS object to gain access to this information and it
would therefore be unable to obtain any info from the database other
than for the user who to which the cookie belongs on that machine.

Jason,

Thanks for your feedback. What I've found, and I'm sure you probably can't
duplicate due to not having any other filter DLLs than ASP, is more in
regards to IIS itself, and not ASP.

Before I get into the specifics, let me reply on your points.
* I had already disabled the "Windows NT Challenge/Response" in IIS
* I have tested in IE 3.01 and Navigator 4.0 Preview 2

Okey, well I thought the MBS would be an integration between billing and account management.

Then here's my problem.

I'm using a 3rd party dll to filter users into a pay site, (the filter checks a table to see if a user is in there, and if so,
gives it the go ahead to get the info under a directory....)

Kevin,

From a management perspective; Administrators need to be able to look into
the MPS database like any database. (Even if its a textual database in this
case).
There must be a way to impersonate GUIDs and come up with a table of GUIDs
versus its properties.

Kevin, can you tell me if this is at all possible with site server 1.0? I
need to have this by middle of august 1997. If it's not possible; I will
have a mirror of the MPS properties inside a SQLserver database. Every
change or update to the MPS is reflected in my

Hi Bob, I'll try to do a cut and paste of what we've been talking about here.

Well it seems to me that by the size I don't really need MBS for the relational database support, I do.....

Perhaps I have not correctly explained Membership System. Let me
rephrase by answering some of what you have said in your original
message, below.

Hi Bob, ok well by what you are saying MBS is not for me for now.

Now why wouldn't Microsoft add an authentication option to their chat server or anyother application(web,news,....) that would look for a username and password
in specified columns of a specified table of a specified database through either jet/odbc/sql. ?
